چکیده

Abstract Background Radioactive iodine 131 (I-131) is used in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer after thyroidectomy; however, its accumulation non-thyroidal regions may give false positive results on whole body scan (WBS). Only a few cases radioiodine uptake orbital region patients with have been reported, which could be due to metastasis or causes resulting from contamination inflammatory etiology. Case presentation We describe case 49-year-old male history papillary carcinoma. The follow-up I-131 showed focus increased radiotracer left orbit. Correlative single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT-CT) that was stenosis nasolacrimal duct causing obstructive symptoms side. Dacryoscintigraphy also demonstrated significant obstruction system. Conclusions rare adverse event therapy can result an scan, mimicking metastasis. use additional spot views and SPECT-CT images along thyroglobulin levels help physicians clarifying situation these uncertain cases.

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction as a complication of iodine-131 therapy in patients with thyroid cancer.

PURPOSE There are few studies evaluating the effect of radioioine therapy on the lacrimal drainage system. This study reports on symptomatic and asymptomatic nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) as complications of high-dose radioiodine therapy in these patients. METHODS Eighty-one cases were randomly selected from a population of radioiodine-treated differentiated thyroid carcinoma patients ...

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction following radioactive iodine 131 therapy in differentiated thyroid cancers: review of 19 cases

BACKGROUND Radioactive iodine 131 ((131)I) therapy has long been used in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancers (DTC). While salivary and lacrimal glandular complications secondary to (131)I therapy are well documented, there is little in the literature addressing nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO). We aimed to evaluate the frequency of (131)I therapy-acquired NLDO, its correlation t...

Comparison and evaluation of value of thymoglobulin level in serum and I-131 whole body scan (I-131 WBS) in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma [Persian]

This study was done in research institute of nuclear medicine from 1988-1992 for evaluation of the value of serum thyroglobulin level in comparison with 1-131 whole body scan (1-131 WBS) in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. 204 patients who had total or near total thyroidectomy treated with 1-131 were evaluated in this study. Out of 204 patients 136 di...

Inguinal Endometriosis Visualized on I-131 Whole Body Scan

We present a rare case with inguinal iodine-131 (I-131) uptake on whole body scan. The patient was suffering from a painful right inguinal mass during menstrual period, which was later sonographically and histopathologically confirmed to be an inguinal focus of endometriosis. Endometriosis is a previously reported site of radioiodine uptake and detection of radioiodine uptake in the inguinal re...

Post-Therapeutic I-131 Whole Body Scan in Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer

Therapy with radioiodine (I-131) has been used for patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer such as papillary and follicular thyroid carcinoma to ablate normal thyroid tissue or to treat metastatic lesions. The improvement of survival rates and decrease of recurrence rates after I-131 therapy has been documented by retrospective studies (Mazzaferri & Jhiang, 1994; Samaan et al., 1992). ...
